Q&A with Chef Greg Silverman, CEO of West Side Campaign Against Hunger

West Side Campaign Against Hunger (WSCAH), a nonprofit partner of Goodnation, has been alleviating hunger for over 40 years, ensuring that all New Yorkers have access with dignity to a choice of healthy food and supportive services.

In honor of Hunger Action Month, we asked Greg Silverman, their CEO, some questions about food insecurity today.

Q: Can you provide insight into the level of food insecurity in New York City today and how COVID has and continues to impact this issue?

A: Hunger has been on the rise since the start of the pandemic; to give you an idea of the increased need, over the past year we served more than double the amount of people we did last year and, in that time, we've partnered with over 65 community-based organizations to help meet this need, a 333% increase as compared to the 15 we worked with pre-pandemic.

Q: What is the biggest need right now for organizations like yours and the communities you serve?

A: Our organization is seeing an ever-increasing demand across the city for reliable access to healthy food. Our ability to partner with dozens of organizations across all 5 boroughs is made possible by having the dollars necessary to cover the cost of purchase and distribution of healthy food.

Q: What is one thing you’ve been able to accomplish as an organization since the start of the pandemic that would not have been possible without the support of donors stepping up?

A: We have been able to more than triple our reach and to do so without sacrificing quality of food or depth of support to our now 77,000 customers. Without broad donor support we would never have been able to expand our reach with such speed and efficiency.
