Black Maternal Health Week

A reminder of disparities Black women face

This week, the White House issued a presidential proclamation marking Black Maternal Health Week, as a reminder of the healthcare disparities Black women face in our country due to systemic racism and implicit bias.

For example, Black women are three times more likely to die from pregnancy-related issues than white women, often due to neglect by healthcare professionals.

Black Maternal Health Week is an important moment to consider supporting a nonprofit advocating for healthcare equality for Black women, such as our nonprofit partner SisterSong. In 2019 they developed their Birth Justice Team to address statistics like the one above. With a team of experts, they've developed life-saving trainings to monitor health during labor as well as during postpartum.
